State Treasurer Lynn Fitch Joins Governor in Praising MCEE


Proclamation Acknowledges Commitment to Promoting Financial Literacy

April is Financial Literacy Month and Governor Phil Bryant signed a proclamation today praising the Mississippi Council for Economic Education for its efforts in promoting financial literacy in the state.  “Our mission is to increase economic and financial literacy in Mississippi by providing resources and training to public and private K-12 school teachers, empowering students to create a more prosperous future for themselves and Mississippi,” said MCEE President Selena Swartzfager.

After the Governor signed the proclamation, Treasurer Lynn Fitch praised MCEE saying “We are so proud of the work the Council has done over the past 11 years in providing economic and financial literacy education to teachers and students statewide.  Helping Mississippians better manage their finances will grow our economy and our workforce.”

One of the top priorities for Treasurer Fitch has been to promote financial literacy in schools.  Previous bills submitted by the Treasury to mandate personal finance education in high schools failed in the legislature. Undeterred, Treasurer Fitch has launched TEAM, the Treasurer’s Education About Money initiative. 

The program partners public, private and non-profit organizations to provide teacher training and a successful online finance curriculum for students. With help from partners Trustmark, Regions, Community Spirit Bank and the Community Foundation of NW Mississippi, over 60% of Mississippi’s high schools will already have the classroom resources this fall.  Continuing efforts to bring in other partners will fully fund the curriculum and launch the teacher training program this summer.  “We look forward to working with the TEAM Financial Literacy Initiative to expand our reach,” Swartzfager said. “Financially literate students turn into financially literate adults.”
